Physical Therapy for Sports Injuries

Ouch! You wore the right equipment and you played by the rules, but it happened anyway. You got hurt on the field, and now you wonder when you’ll be back in action.

Every year, thousands of people—both young and old—suffer sports-related injuries. They might be sprains and strains or they could be lacerations, torn muscles, and broken bones. Sometimes your pain will subside in a few days and you’ll be good to go. Other times, you may need some help getting better.002392-Physical therapy

Often your doctor will recommend physical therapy to assist you during the healing process. It can help you regain your strength, flexibility, and range of motion. It can also help you recover if you had surgery to repair a damaged knee, elbow, or other body part.

Your physical therapist will evaluate your condition and determine what exercises and stretches can most help you. He will meet with you just once or twice, or maybe even weekly over the course of several months. It depends on your individual injury.

Here are some important tips to keep in mind:

  • Practice makes perfect. The exercises may be hard to do at first, but keep at it. You’ll likely need to keep up the routine at home.
  • Ask questions. If you’re not sure how to do an exercise, ask your therapist to explain it more. Also ask how the exercise should feel. Will it hurt a little? Will there be a particular sensation? Make sure you tell your therapist if you continue to feel pain. The more you know, the better you’ll perform each move.
  • Learn about your body. Pay attention to how your body reacts, and have your therapist explain how each exercise works. You’ll be amazed as you see your body heal.
  • Take your time. You may be eager to take the field again, but allow yourself time to get better. Don’t rush your treatment, and be sure to listen to your therapist’s advice.
  • Pat yourself on the back. As you get better, celebrate the success you’re having. You sometimes may feel frustrated during physical therapy, so take a minute to praise yourself as you make progress.
